'All Of Sony Systems' Hacked, Claims Ransomware Group, Says It Plans To Sell The Stolen Data

Sony Group Corp. (NYSE:SNE) has reportedly been targeted in a substantial ransomware attack, allegedly orchestrated by a newly surfaced group on the dark web.

What Happened: Ransomed.vc, a fresh entity operating on the dark web, claims to have hacked into all Sony systems. The group, interestingly, functions as both a ransomware operator and a ransomware-as-a-service provider, reported VGC.

This group, reported to be operating from Russia and Ukraine, is allegedly working in alignment with the EU's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and various other data privacy laws. They pinpoint vulnerabilities in company systems and report violations of these laws, supposedly using them as a tool to coerce victims into compliance, as stated by Cyber Security Connect.

Sony has not yet made a public statement regarding the breach or the extent of the impact caused by Ransomed.vc on the company.

This is not new territory for Sony, as the company has previously experienced similar attacks. In 2011, Sony’s PlayStation Network was subjected to a sweeping breach, during which approximately 77 million registered accounts were infiltrated, leading to the total shutdown of online features.

Why It Matters: Cybersecurity attacks, especially ransomware, have risen in recent years, posing significant threats to corporations worldwide. Sony’s latest alleged breach underscores the importance of robust cybersecurity systems and measures to combat these threats. The emergence of groups like Ransomed.vc, which seemingly exploit data privacy laws to perpetrate their attacks, adds a new, complex layer to this ongoing issue.

The incident also raises questions about the effectiveness of GDPR and other data privacy regulations. If groups can use these laws to their advantage in carrying out attacks, it suggests potential loopholes that need to be addressed.

For Sony, this breach is yet another reminder of the vulnerabilities in their systems following the massive PlayStation Network attack in 2011. The industry will closely watch the company's response to this alleged attack, which could potentially influence future cybersecurity measures.
