Former President Donald Trump is one of the leading candidates in the 2024 presidential election.
After a falling out with former Vice President Mike Pence, Trump is set to select a new vice-presidential candidate to join his campaign for the 2024 election.
What Happened: Trump remains the betting favorite to win the 2024 presidential election after being found guilty on 34 federal counts in a highly publicized criminal trial alleging falsified business records.
While Trump awaits sentencing and an appeal in the legal process, attention on the 2024 election campaign for the former president is turning to who he will select as his running mate.
Trump's campaign team has begun vetting top contenders as reported by the Associated Press.
The list of vice president candidates who received vetting requests from Trump's campaign team include:
North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum
Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.)
Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio)
Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.)
Rep. Byron Donalds (R-Fla.)
Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.)
Ben Carson
Sources said that candidates have been asked for various levels of paperwork as part of the vetting process.
The vetting process could signal a vice-presidential pick coming sooner than later, but Trump's campaign team cautioned that the process is still early.
"Anyone claiming to know who or when President Trump will choose his VP is lying, unless the person is named Donald J. Trump," Trump campaign spokesperson Brian Hughes said in a statement shared by the Associated Press.
The Republican National Convention in July could serve as one potential event to announce a running mate according to a report.
Several of the candidates who have been vetted recently were among the key people who showed up at Trump's hush money trial to show support for the former president and in some cases to criticize the legal process and individuals involved as a way for Trump to get around a gag order.

Betting Odds: With the recent list of candidates being vetted, the betting odds on prediction market Polymarket have changed.

Over $31 million has been bet on the site for the market of who Trump will choose for his vice president candidate, up from $17 million at the end of April.
Here are the current odds for Trump's vice president on Polymarket, with odds from May 9 in parentheses:

Scott has jumped to the top of the leaderboard on Polymarket as the current betting favorite. In early May, the Other Man option was the favorite. With Burgum not listed individually, the North Dakota governor falls into this category.
Burgum has been spending increased time with the former president and viewed by some political experts as a frontrunner.
Back in January, Stefanik and South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem were the betting favorites on Polymarket. Controversy may have sent Noem off the shortlist and Stefanik was the only female candidate on the reported list of seven candidates being vetted.
Time will tell who Trump selects as his running mate. With a close election predicted for the head-to-head rematch against President Joe Biden, Trump’s vice presidential candidate could prove increasingly important to win over certain demographics and independent voters.
