Looking For A Job? Microsoft's LinkedIn Introduces Generative AI Transformation For Job Search, Cover Letters

Author: Hayden Buckfire | June 13, 2024 03:17pm

Microsoft Corp (NASDAQ:MSFT) subsidiary LinkedIn is the latest social media platform to join the artificial intelligence (AI) craze.

What Happened: LinkedIn announced the new features in a post on Thursday. The changes will be added on top of LinkedIn’s existing “AI-powered professional guide,” released in November 2023.

One new feature allows jobseekers to converse with LinkedIn’s built-in AI. For example, a user could ask, "Find me a remote marketing job in Detroit that pays at least $110,000."

After finding a job, LinkedIn can generate a cover letter or a letter of introduction to accompany their application. Users will also be able to submit their resume and job application to the platform and receive personalized feedback generated by AI.

The features unveiled by LinkedIn in 2023 included AI-generated summaries of feed posts, AI-powered profile writing suggestions and AI-powered direct message recommendations.

Why it Matters: New features on the job-hunting platform could substantially shake up the job market.

The job market has undergone several changes since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Work-from-home has enabled companies to widen their talent pools to other regions of the world. These developments have made digital talent acquisition platforms such as LinkedIn even more important.

Although AI features can make the process of writing cover letters and submitting applications easier, it may erode the human value of submitting them in the first place.
