Hit TV Show 'The Boys' Pokes Fun At NFTs, Did They Take A Hit At Donald Trump Too?

Author: Chris Katje | July 12, 2024 03:13pm

Amazon.com Inc‘s (NASDAQ:AMZN) hit series “The Boys” may have used non-fungible tokens (NFTs) during a recent episode to poke fun at Donald Trump.

What Happened: In the July 11 episode, the main character Homelander is pitched on NFTs.

"Marketing would like to start selling these NFTs of you. Apparently you're not just buying jpgs, you're joining a community," a character tells Homelander in the season’s seventh episode.

The Homelander tells her to get out, seemingly passing on the idea.

The NFT images shown feature Homelander dressed as Santa, a hunter and a race car driver.

People likened the images to the controversial Trump Digital Trading Card NFTs. Santa, hunter and race car driver traits are all featured in the original collection.

Trump NFTs have experienced high volatility in recent months related to his trials and political events. A gathering of top Trump NFT holders saw the former president speak positively of cryptocurrency and potentially win over Bitcoin fans. After releasing an initial NFT collection, Trump also released a second series and a Mugshot Edition.

Why It's Important: Over the years, "The Boys" has been one of the top hit shows on Prime Video, the streaming platform owned by Amazon.

The mention of NFTs seemed to point to them in a negative light and comes as popularity has faded for the sector.

Cryptocurrency and NFTs have received mention on television and in movies before, but this marks one of the more recent mentions of the sector.

"The Boys" premiered in 2019. Since then, it has been one of the biggest Amazon exclusive titles. The fourth season, which kicked off on June 13, will end with an eighth episode on July 18.

A planned fifth season is set to be the last in the series.

Based on a comic book series of the same name, "The Boys" follows a group of vigilantes who take down corrupt superheroes who abuse their superpowers.
