'Stranger Things' Creators Have New Show Coming To Netflix: What Fans Should Know

Author: Chris Katje | July 17, 2024 03:44pm

While "Stranger Things" fans eagerly await a fifth and final season on Netflix (NASDAQ:NFLX), the show’s creators have more content coming to the streaming platform.

What Happened: Matt Duffer and Ross Duffer, known as the Duffer Brothers, have more content coming to Netflix, but it's not a “Stranger Things” spinoff.

Instead, they’re set to produce a new horror series called "Something Very Bad Is Going To Happen."

According to Variety, the new series comes from writer Haley Z. Boston, whose work includes Netflix shows "Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities" and "Brand New Cherry Flavor."

"We were knocked flat when we first read Haley's script. She is a major new talent with a singular voice – her writing is twisted, terrifying, funny, and just… very Haley," the Duffer Brothers said. "We feel so lucky to be producing her first show."

"Something Very Bad Is Going To Happen" is being pitched as "an atmospheric horror series set at a wedding, following a bride and groom in the week leading up to their ill-fated nuptials."

Boston, Andrea Sperling, Hilary Leavitt, and the Duffer Brothers are executive producers on the new series.

Why It's Important: The Duffer Brothers have an overall deal with Netflix and recently formed the production company Upside Down Pictures.

A new first look at the fifth season of "Stranger Things" premiered on Tuesday. Production is reportedly halfway completed, with a premiere date slated for 2025.

Another Duffer Brothers produced show, "The Boroughs," is expected to begin production in the fall. Other upcoming projects from the brothers include a "Stranger Things" spinoff and a live-action adaptation of “Death Note.”

"Stranger Things" premiered in 2016. Since then, it has become a massive hit for Netflix. It’s also a consumer products/IP licensing powerhouse, with reported spinoffs in the works.

The fourth season of "Stranger Things" broke records for an English-language series. Viewers watched about 287 million hours of the show in the first week. Viewership for the fourth season totaled 1.35 billion hours in the first 28 days.
