Elon Musk's X Axes Bitcoin, Crypto Emojis From Hashtags

Author: Murtuza Merchant | July 26, 2024 11:51am

Emojis associated with Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC) and other cryptocurrencies have disappeared from the Elon Musk-owned social platform X (formerly Twitter), which is home to some of the largest active crypto communities.

What Happened: The removal of these emojis was not announced by X’s social media accounts or press pages as of Friday morning in Europe.

Early on Friday, crypto users on X noticed that the familiar emojis accompanying the "#bitcoin" hashtag were missing.

It was later discovered that emojis for hashtags such as #bnbchain and #cryptocom were also removed.

Additionally, the emoji for #MAGA, which previously featured Republican candidate Donald Trump, was no longer visible ahead of his appearance at the ongoing Bitcoin 2024 conference in Nashville.

Benzinga has reached out to X with request for comment.

The bitcoin emojis were first introduced in 2020 when Jack Dorsey owned X, then known as Twitter.

Dorsey aimed to promote the bitcoin symbol to be included in Unicode, a text encoding standard maintained by the Unicode Consortium that supports text in all digitizable writing systems.

Previously, X, as Twitter, charged companies up to $1 million to add a branded emoji or symbol to hashtags.

This was a strategy to help companies distinguish their branding from competitors and generate consumer buzz.

What’s Next: For those interested in the evolving landscape of digital assets, Benzinga’s Future of Digital Assets event on November 19th promises to provide further insights and discussions on such developments.
