Tesla Has A 'Clear Path' To Improving FSD In August And Reducing 'Interventions,' Says Elon Musk

Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) CEO Elon Musk said on Wednesday that the company has a “clear path” to vastly improving the performance of the company’s full self-driving (FSD) driver assistance technology in August.

What Happened: “We have a clear path to doubling average miles between interventions in August,” Musk said, hinting that the performance of FSD software will likely improve.

Tesla evaluates the capability of its FSD software by the miles it can drive autonomously without interventions by the human driver. The more miles driven without interventions, the better the technology’s performance.

Last week, Musk also said that several versions of the software will be released in quick succession going forward for better performance.

Why It Matters: Tesla is attempting to improve its FSD software to enable vehicles to operate without human intervention. The company’s latest offering, its stainless steel Cybertruck, is also expected to get access to the software in August.

However, the software is not without safety concerns.

Earlier this week, it was reported that Washington authorities have discovered the involvement of FSD in an accident near Seattle in April. The Tesla Model S driver told a trooper after the crash that he looked at his cell phone while the vehicle was moving and the vehicle subsequently collided with a vehicle in front, killing a 28-year-old motorcyclist.

Tesla, however, warns drivers that they must pay attention to the road at all times when the technology is deployed and be ready to take over when required.
