Volkswagen Recalls Every ID.4 SUV in U.S. for Door Malfunction Concerns

Author: Anan Ashraf | September 10, 2024 07:09am

German automaker Volkswagen (OTC:VWAGY) is recalling 98,806 of its ID.4 electric SUVs in the U.S. citing concerns about the door handles opening unexpectedly, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said on Tuesday.

What Happened: The recall includes model year 2021- 2024 ID.4 vehicles. The door handles may allow water to enter the circuit board assembly and cause the doors to open unexpectedly, the U.S. auto safety regulator said. This may pose a risk of harm to objects and people outside the vehicle while also putting the occupants at risk if the vehicle is moving.

The company dealers will inspect and replace the door handles as necessary to fix the issue in addition to updating the vehicle software. The fix will be conducted at no cost to the customer.

Why It Matters: Volkswagen said that the company is not aware of any crashes or injuries due to the issue. However, it is aware of 135 warranty claims in the eleven months between June 2023 and May 2024.

The issue is not yet corrected in production and the proposed fix is still under development, the company said. Both vehicle owners and dealers will be notified once the remedy is available.
